Balcony solar panels: what actually fits
On a balcony the panel has to fit three things: your railing, your sunlight and the wind. A full-size 400–500 W panel is about the size of a door laid sideways and weighs around 45–50 pounds. If that’s too much, smaller or flexible panels trade some power for an easier fit.

Size and weight
Measure your railing before you shop: width, height, and what it’s made of. A panel should sit fully against the railing without sticking out past the edge or above the top rail.
- Full-size rigid panels (400–500 W): most power per dollar. Heavy, so the mount and railing matter.
- Smaller rigid panels (100–300 W): easier to handle and fit narrow railings. You may need several.
- Flexible panels: light and thin. Less power, shorter life.
Bifacial panels on a railing
Bifacial panels collect light on both sides. On a railing the back faces your balcony floor or wall, so the gain is usually small. Worth it only if the back side sees a bright surface or open sky.
How much a railing panel makes
A panel hanging straight up on a railing makes less than one tilted toward the sun. Facing south it gets about two-thirds of the best possible output. Facing east or west, about half. Facing north, about a quarter. See it with the sun simulator.
Railing safety
- Check that your railing is solid. Old or loose railings aren’t a place for 50 pounds of glass.
- Use a mount made for your panel size, fastened at several points.
- On high floors, think about wind and what’s below you.
- Check your lease, HOA or condo rules before you hang anything outside. Apartment guide.
Common questions
Do balcony panels need cleaning?
Now and then. Dust, pollen and bird droppings lower output a little. A rinse with plain water a few times a year is usually enough.
How heavy is a balcony solar panel?
A standard full-size panel weighs roughly 45 to 50 pounds and is about the size of a door laid sideways. Smaller and flexible panels are lighter but usually make less power per square foot.
Can wind blow a panel off a balcony?
A panel acts like a sail. Use a mount rated for your panel's size, secure it at several points, and on high floors or exposed spots consider a smaller panel. If you're unsure, ask the kit maker what wind load the mount is rated for.
Do flexible panels work as well?
They're lighter and easier to fit, but they generally produce less and age faster than rigid glass panels. They're a fair trade where weight or space is the problem.
