What balcony solar costs
Most balcony solar kits cost between $600 and $1,500. Small kits and bare panels start lower; kits with a battery go higher. Spread over 20 years, the power from a $700 kit costs a fraction of what you pay the utility.

The price range
| What you buy | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Most complete kits | $600–$1,500 |
| Whole range, smallest to largest | about $300–$2,200 |
What you pay for
- Panels. More watts, more money. Efficient panels cost more but fit more power on a small railing.
- The microinverter. Certified ones cost more. In states that require certification, that’s not optional.
- Mounting. Sometimes included, sometimes extra. Tilting stands cost more than flat railing hooks but make more power.
- A battery. The biggest add-on by far. When it pays.
- Shipping. Panels are big and heavy; check it before you compare prices.
What your solar power really costs
Divide the price of a $700 kit by everything it makes in 20 years and you get a price per kWh you can hold up against your bill. 800 W, south-facing railing:
| State | Your solar power | Grid power today |
|---|---|---|
| California | 4.6¢ | 33.4¢ |
| New York | 5.5¢ | 28.6¢ |
| Connecticut | 5.3¢ | 30.5¢ |
| Maryland | 5.2¢ | 22.2¢ |
| Colorado | 4.4¢ | 16.7¢ |
| Virginia | 5.1¢ | 17.1¢ |
| Utah | 4.3¢ | 13.2¢ |
That’s before counting that some solar power goes to the grid unused. The point stands: once it’s paid off, the rest is close to free. When you get your money back.
Common questions
Is it cheaper to buy panels and an inverter separately?
Sometimes, but you'll likely lose the kit certification your state's law requires. For plug-in solar, buy the set.
Is there a tax credit for balcony solar?
Don't count on one. Tax rules for small solar have changed recently and depend on your situation. Ask a tax professional before you assume any credit; our payback numbers include none.
Are there running costs?
Very few. No fees from the utility in states with a plug-in law, no maintenance contract. Wipe the panel now and then, and expect to replace the microinverter at some point.
Why do prices range so much?
Size, brand, certification, mounting and batteries. A small 400 W kit without a mount sits at the low end; a 1,200 W kit with a battery at the top.
